Rabbi Lam began by quoting a Mishnah that established three points; “Make yourself a Rav (teacher), acquire yourself a friend and judge everybody to the side of merit”. The first part refers to making yourself available to your Rav. He isn’t obligated to come to you and check if you have any questions! So, you have to find time and put an effort to communicate with him. Also, in the process of marrying off a child, one of the first questions asked by the other “party” is “do you have a Rebbe?” or “who’s your Rebbe?”
