The Copper Snake

When G-d sent venomous snakes to bite the Israelites as punishment, He commanded Moses to make an image of a 'fiery serpent'...and whoever had been bitten, would look upon this image and be healed. How did seeing this image bring about healing — and what is the Torah's lesson for us today?
