The priestly garments, Purim costumes, and the mystery of disguise all converge this week, as the Torah portion of Tetzaveh is read on the special Sabbath of ‘Shabbat Zachor’ – the Sabbath of Remembrance, in preparation for the upcoming holiday of Purim. The special additional Torah reading for this Shabbat (Deut. 25:17) delivers the warning to ‘remember and not forget’ the arch-enemy Amalek…but the deepest secret is that the elusive dichotomy of remembering and forgetting is more than just a part of the human condition…it is part of a Divine program that is hewn into the very fabric of creation.
