The forefathers were very involved with converting people to Judaism, and Rebbe Nachman says that Yaacov was especially involved in bringing people close to Hashem. A person who devotes his life to helping people come back to Hashem, has a life filled with ups and downs, similar to the difficulties Yaacov experienced because he is involved in such holy work.
