Rabbi Chaim Richman
This week’s Torah portions of Tazria and Metzora feature the mysterious ailment known as ‘tzarat,’ – a unique, Heavenly-directed spiritual phenomena that manifested through physical symptoms. Tzarat, often mistranslated and generally misunderstood, is contracted as a result of speaking lashon hara – gossip, slander, tale baring and the like – about another person. A proper understanding of the mechanism and dynamic of this ‘disease’ and its ‘cure’ provides us with a sobering, life-changing lesson about the devastation caused by evil speech.
