Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year is experienced in a dramatically different way than the secular New Year, January 1. Each expresses a very different understanding of the meaning of life and how we confront our mortality and utilize our free will. This lecture explores the philosophical foundations of
both expressions and their conceptual underpinnings. As the day commemorating the creation of Adam and Eve, Rosh Hashana is an ideal time for introspection, stocktaking and resolving to improve our lives. The lecture also discusses the significance of various meanings of the blowing of the shofar, the central
ritual of the day.
