What is Tisha B’Av supposed to accomplish? On Yom Kippur, we fast, do teshuvah, and emerge ready to change. But after Tisha B’Av, what is meant to be different?

In this powerful schmooze, the Rosh Yeshiva explains that Tisha B’Av is not simply a day to search for stories that will make us sad. Its deepest pain is the distance between the Jewish people and Hashem, a galus in which countless Jews no longer know what it means to be Jewish or recognize how deeply they thirst for a relationship with their Creator.

Tisha B’Av gives us a sober perspective on the state of Klal Yisrael. It teaches us to feel the pain, crave Hashem’s closeness, and call out with the final words of Eicha: “Hashiveinu Hashem eilecha v’nashuvah,” bring us back to You, and we will return.

As Tisha B’Av comes shortly before Elul, that pain must lead somewhere: to renewed priorities, personal teshuvah and a commitment to do more for the Jewish people.
