All too often we hear the dramatic stories from people who decided to isolate themselves as a result of their decision to become Orthodox Jews. The problem is that these stories are full of suffering, confusion and hopelessness. What went wrong?

In Parashat Chukat we learn about the extraordinary benefits Am Yisrael in the isolated desert. It seems like the question would be why did HaShem make life so easy for them, but so hard for us? Even when I isolated myself, I didn't get any food and water from Heaven? What went wrong?
